Honestly I’d say it is somewhat necessary because she helps flesh out Nebula as a person—not as a god or player. Also I would like to mention that nothing weird ever happens between them. She has zero romantic feelings towards Nebula.

like i said, the Sun God is not the same god as the one worshipped by Earth's Sun Cult. Giovanni's "father" was the Sun God of his world where he used to live with the mermaids. the Sun Goddes is the God whom the Sun Cult of Earth worships. so using different genders for them is right
are you referring to when Jio said he also serves a God? if so, he meant the Sun God from Giovanni's world that now lives inside a teddy bear so he can enjoy Jio's food. and by serving he means he's feeding his elder father delicious food every day. i think the TLer thought the teddy bear and the Sun Goddess were the same
