I kinda think that prolly those marks were his mother's work that's why Sam's getting revenge on women. But no matter how bad possibly his mother did on him, he can't just toy with every woman there is. I also think the old man disappeared on purpose, he's a mage. He might have felt it in his old bones of experience. He might be yhe only one to remember her as well in the end till his dying old age.
