So— given our current situation based on the #BLM protests, I wanted to ask about colourism. Discrimination based on the colour of someone’s skin has been really present and active all over the world, especially against people of black backgrounds.
In Asia, colourism is STILL incredibly active. As seen in Asian skin-care commercials, skin “brightening” is the act of attempting to make skin WHITER. It is commonly seen as “more beautiful” to be white-skinned in Asia than tanned. Although some people acknowledge it as “personal preference” and relate it back to Asian history, this does not validate such discriminatory actions. Really, Asian countries have been socially unprogressive towards this sad issue. Especially Kpop (take for example, Kai from EXO).
I wanted to ask you guys about your opinions on a manga website because I realised this issue is active within anime + manga + Kpop (extremely), which is a shared interest everyone has on here.
Not trying to insultingly target Asia, just an opinion.
So basically, I just wanted to talk about the half-human half-animal character fetish in anime and manga...
I feel like morphing characters into having cat ears or having a tail etc is low-key gross, but I’m not trying to judge in any way for those who do like it. I respect your likes and dislikes and I’m not trying to be an asshole about it!
BUT I think there’s a small aspect to the concept that makes me feel a bit triggered. There’s no doubting it, mostly a lot of female characters & so-called “ukes” (from the genre yaoi) are sexualised into having animalistic features— such as having bunny/cat/dog ears, wearing tails or behaving in animal-like ways. I feel like these types of characters are always degraded into animal-like roles to convey their submissiveness, which is, undoubtedly, super messed up. But then again, these types of gender imbalanced issues have been thriving in manga and anime ever since the start. I understand that this concept is popular due to the Japanese culture and how it is apparently “cute” to have animal features— but this still doesn’t validate it healthily. It’s still fetishisation and immortalised sexualisation :/
I’m not trying to lambaste manga or anime, but I feel like feminism is non-existent in some manga and anime. Sure, there are female characters that are empowered by maybe beating some up guy or acting like a man, but I feel like creators think that just because a girl does a stereotypical “guy-thing“, it means that they’re “empowered”?! I feel like they also forget that feminism isn’t just female empowerment, it’s also toxic masculinity, which is also very present in it (╯°Д °)╯╧╧
Like—name one good manga or anime where the girl doesn’t flash her undergarments or is accidentally groped. Females are hardcore sexually objectified in anime and manga, and I’m kinda sick of it because I enjoy watching and reading it.
