tbh I feel bad for his ex link. I mean he was selfish for not running away with Chi-hwan when they had a chance. but he killed those people to save his lover. he even got raped because he was trying to protect him! his sacrifices should count for something. I don't like the way author just painted him as villain.
all he wanted to do was do something with his knowledge. even with the new high-status he never let go of Hwan. he got raped ffs! I wanted Hwan to find out about that. the cost of protecting him.

I think Joohyun was a complex character, but he was most certainly a villain. Him surviving rape should be something to take into consideration but that does not excuse his behavior afterward. I think the author hints that Chi-hwan was aware it was rape, considering he only kills his abuser and mentions he was never mad about that. Instead, it was the genocide he couldn't forgive. His selfish choice (even if it was for love) lead to the innocent killing of thousands and that choice came with consequences. He also had many years to reflect on his choices and his punishment but instead continued on his path harming more innocent people like Sooin. He never learned his lesson since even at the very end he still made the wrong choices and for that reason, he was a well written villian.

I mean imagine having to go through the trauma of knowing you were the cause of so many deaths of people you knew and loved because you wanted to protect someone, but then that person you wanted to protect ends up despising you and desiring to kill you. A person who is not affected by that would have to be inhuman to not let that throw them off a stray course. And on top of that, Joohyun had to suffer because Chihwan wouldn’t drink his blood, so imo the author did a horrible job and he shouldn’t even be cast as a villain
