I'm personally also someone who can't understand people like that, but rather than thinking of it as an overreaction, I guess the best way to frame it is to think that their subject of love is different to you.
They don't have to be ignorant or privileged to have excessive empathy, but you also don't have to be heartless and cold to not have that......
