It’s absolutely romantically horrifying that someone can love so much/hard that they purposely hurt the ones they love so they can’t be with anyone else.

He tells the reader at the end that he did it because he didn't want anyone to fall in love with him
When he said "I did it. I acted on impulse." "I hope he won't be in pain afterward." This is referring superficially to the intimacy they had. Though it can be interpreted as him admitting he did it based on all the other clues throughout the story. It’s never explicitly stated that the manager is the attacker, but we’re given plenty of hints, including phrases like this that can be clear indicators. Such as how he mentioned the guy’s neck being clear of wounds, then mentions how he fell in love with that same neck at first sight. Obviously we’re being told he spared the neck of all places because it was his favourite part of his love’s body.
