I don’t think we’re meant to feel comfortable watching Sam here. His face made me uneasy too, and it feels like a measure of how well the author conveyed the psychological collapse. When people say “this doesn’t look like Sam,” the story’s implicit answer feels like: exactly bcs the Sam we knew no longer exists.
Even CG seems to realize the extent of what he caused and looks unsettled by how completely Sam broke.
