Might be a hot take but does gene even love trevor?? I have to start by saying this is a very well written story but is it a good romantic story?? In my opinion it really wasnt... i loved how real the characters felt and i could genuinely feel how deeply trevors feelings were for gene... he quite literally loved him enough to give him everything he has then set him free.. he made a sacrifice there... and he prob knew that genes feelings for him werent the same as his... From how i see it yes gene liked trevor.. he was grateful to him... yes he was willing to let everything go in order to stay with trevor.. but not out of love... it was only cz he was indebted to him cz trevor was the reason for what he has become.. he only ever took from him and never gave anything in return.. he liked being showered in love and being taken care of... but thats it... He left his family and got tortured by it but he still made the same choice again... frankly because trevor mattered less to him... he wasnt his family nor his lover and he only ever got with him to pay back him debt cz he knew how much trevor love him... it was a pure one sided love... that's why i found trevor so angelic.. cz he loved without asking anything in return... he didnt even ask gene to stay in touch with him... and gene took that and ran with it.. never even intended on coming back... didnt even send him one photocard during those 16 years... Not to mention that the writer was intentional with it and pointed at genes lack of romantic love multiple times during the story... so yea in opinion this is really a miserable one sided love story and i did not like that.. Tho id love to hear how others viewed it.. as i so badly wish that i just got it wrong...
it has been months since I read this so I don't remember the fine details but I do agree w you especially e gene not sending any words or card or anything since Trevor himself won't be able to bc he doesn't know gene's address as far as I remember UNLIKE GENE who knew exactly where Trevor lived. this still bothers me sm
Heyaaa, sorry for my bad English in advance. From my point of view, gene is totally in love with Trevor. You see, the way both were raised are completely different. For Trevor the thing he does to show love is (as you said) to give everything he has. Gene on the other hand has a more twisted way, because he is scared and impulsive (besides being full of insecurity and religious trauma) to him, saying that Trevor is god, is more than love, it is devotion, he was raised to believe in god only and blindly, the way he does with Trevor. Two greats examples of this requited love are, the fantasies he had the first time he masturbated (he didn’t knew Trevor completely yet) and the flashback he had of his father telling him to forgive himself once he loved someone (I don’t remember the words exactly) What I’m trying to say with all of this is, yes, it looks like dependency and familiarity at first, but the author shows Gene, a free man who isn’t scared to get away anymore, and yet, he comes back in a rush to speak with the nephew of his past lover? Knowing how impulsive he is, you could think that he didn’t think twice, but it’s not about that, he went because of Trevor. He’s also worried enough as to ask a teenager how to go on with his relationship with Trevor (this time, not out of fear, but out of love) With that said, it’s true that it leaves room to explore Gene’s feelings in another volume. (Specially with the author’s implying if they’ll stay friends or lovers) although I’m 100% sure that for gene there is no one else but Trevor.

I honestly was waiting for such refreshing reply,, it has been a hot min since a read it so im not as emotionally vulnerable anymore but i have to say that i really like your take on the story... While i never denied genes positive feelings toward Trevor i still had my doubts about wether those feelings were romantic or not... And yes i agree that genes entire personality revolves around his traumas and insecurities so when i said that genes feelings for trevor weren't romantic i never meant that it was a choice made by gene... But rather just a lack of ability to offer that kinda of love... i really appreciate your reply.. cz i really just wanted to be persuaded into thinking the same thing... For the comfort of my heart that is lmao.. im just a hopeless romantic afterall

I honestly didn’t stop thinking about your take after some hours after reading it (I even reflected on it while I was showering lmao) Usually I never respond to these kind of topics but your take was so honest that made me rethink to answer because I wasn’t instantly sure. It’s a topic that for some reason made me itch inside, but maybe because we tend to empathize with characters like Trevor and we can’t stop thinking man, if you love him you NEED TO SHOW IT MORE. But yes, after thinking about it some more I thought, wait… Gene stayed in contact with Trevor’s friend, and even replied to his nephew, he was a romance enjoyer. The one who didn’t contact Trevor, nor offered a solution to see each other often (since he had the upper hand in this situation) Trevor was the man with power here, he voluntarily choose to let Gene go, and only ONLY come back, once he was sure of his feelings. So yeah, I bet Gene can only fall deeper and deeper with this man lol
Anyways, I loved discussing this with you, it was so fun to really dive into the manga again and analyze everything. I wish you lots of requited and healthy love
