I think he's always loved her. He hates her because he believes she abandoned him to die and wants revenge and ownership of her, but still deeply loves her like he always has.

Like, because he was mad and hurt that she abandoned him he wanted her to feel pain. So much so that he even thought he had seen her smile enough, that he grew tired of it, but when he realized that spark in her was still there he wanted to be the reason for it.
