He literally just had a change of heart during the last few chaps of the novel which makes me think that the following ch will just make us feel despaired, annoyed, angsted, cry and hurting AAAAAAAAAA time to stack up chapters of this manhwa for a while

Hmmmmmrather than the ML, I think the Captain is the possessive and obssessive character here in the story. Although he's trying to "help" her escape, it looks to me that he's just keeping Elan for himself under the pretext of keeping her away from the Emperor (ML).
