I was thinking this exact same thing! The man should have been encouraging him to go to therapy and seek help to unpack and deal with his trauma and past. Right now he's on a path of chasing codependencies and survival mechanisms. Nothing this is going to help bring any permanent healing or resolution to his issues.
I read a manga long ago about a high school boy who gets transmigrated into another world. However it turns out his training in using the sword and battle strategies was done by his grandfather in preparation for if he got isekai'd because apparently the family has a long history of being transmigrated to that other world.
