There is a very prevalent trend and pattern of Korean studios portraying darker skinned men as violent, aggressive and beastly, while pale skinned men and women are frequently portrayed as elegant, refined and above said darker skinned subjects. It’s rooted in colorism, and is fully intentional to manipulate viewers into seeing darker skinned characters as naturally lacking class and refinement. It’s racism.

Okay, so if a POC just so happens to be portrayed as violent, this doesn’t have to immediately warrant red flags, as anyone can have a violent personality, what you have to look for is the context surrounding the character, are they violent due to any cultural context that might seem offensive, such as tribal culture which is often framed as beastly? Or are they violent due to trauma, or a past event(s) that may have shaped their character to be overtly defensive and aggressive, this example is okay, a character who is violent that isn’t depicted by their proximity to ‘beastly’ or ‘wild’ culture, could definitely not be racist.

Although this is one example, you should always keep an eye out for how they treat people of color in manwha, how much care an artist/studio puts into their characters backgrounds, their appearances. There is ignorance in everything, while it may not be intentional, it is their responsibility to unlearn and correct these mistakes, and the reader’s responsibility to hold them accountable.

I also would like to make a comment that I think Mincheol’s resentment later on stems off of misogynist views, but I don’t have too much backstory to supply it with, so maybe I’ll wait until later on in the story. Zzzz >_>
