In terms of a work's merit or enjoyability factor, I would say yes. I believe that once it's out of the artist's hands, you can read and interpret it as you wish. You do not owe the artist a "right" interpretation. What you make of it is yours alone.

Thing is with BL is that the genre isn't inherently about relatability in my experience, so you won't see a lot of stories that have the queer experience in mind.
