Soine Lovers

Complete | Iimo | 2017 released

This is a strange set of stories in that one of them is super cutesy and one of them is about child rape. But okay, whatever works for you, author. The first story is really sweet, so I rated this a four based on that story alone. The others were probably more like a three, partly because they didn't always have a natural flow from one major moment to the next. I hate stories about clones because the concept of replacing someone with a duplicate is depressing to me. Like, does the person you loved originally not even matter anymore? There's an episode of Black Mirror that touches on this very well. It's soul-crushing but it's very reflective of the issues behind the concept of creating a copy of someone. Overall, not the worst thing I've ever read. There are some weird things in the stories that don't fit, for me, but I did like elements of all of the stories included, so hey.

Beautiful Days

Complete | madarame hiro | 2011 released

Very sad. Beautiful art, complicated human emotions. Reading the comments made me think I should skip this, but it ended up being painful in a satisfying way, rather than in a way that destroyed me. I actually preferred the complicated, messy story to the first story. I'm not a fan of incest, for one, but it was also just more typical and cliche than the second story. Didn't hate it, though. I haven't read the precursor manga, so I was sort of filling in the blanks as I went, but I appreciated the nature of the character unfurling, these people lashing out, hurting others so that they can feel your own hurt, etc. Definitely sad, and it leaves a little empty feeling in your gut, but... I've seen much worse. At least they're still trying. (Just from this, though, I wish Sato would dump Akira and find someone better. He's the only one who doesn't seem redeemable, but maybe he's featured in the first story?)

Renzoku Ambivalenz

Ongoing | Yoshida kansuke | 2000 released

What the... Okay, I know I've read the first story elsewhere, but I don't remember it having that ending. I also don't entirely get what it was talking about. Is the other guy a doppelganger? Is he a triplet? Is he a manifestation of the other half of one of the brothers? Either way, so weird and random. It had potential, but it was just too brief and all over the place. I have no problem with dark, gory, or disturbing, but that was just weird. The second story was weird and kind of gross. There was some serious dissonance between the two, like they weren't done by the same person. Is that the case? I need to look. Anyway, this is a fucked up collection, and I'm afraid of what to expect if more stories beyond the two get uploaded. What even...

Kyonshii Keikaku

Complete | Flalala | 2000 released

I'm not big on incest, but this was an interesting story. A little rushed, but I liked the way it came together at the end. It reminds me a little of Dogville, which is weird because I got that sense even before the twist. At any rate, that's what they get.

Restless Webtoon

Complete | Hoben | 2000 released

The pace is a little odd, but I'm intrigued. Only five chapters so far, though. Boo. Poor guys. They both dealt with some crap back in the day.

Heartless

Complete | nishin masumi | 2000 released

This is rather similar to a story I wrote when I was seventeen, haha. I like how pretty the uke is, and I like that you can actually see his penis. That's so rare, I was kind of surprised when it wasn't a weird, glowing orb. I'm sad that my biggest kink (purely fictional) isn't explored more in BL. I hate it in het. You'd think there'd be more stories where the seme is forced to watch the uke be harmed in some way. But maybe other people aren't quite as deranged as myself, lol. EDIT: Holy crap, I thought this was a oneshot! It was marked as complete at the time that I read it, at least. This was amazing! You NEVER see yaoi like this. And yes, this artist is messed up and depressing much of the time, but this was a very interesting story. Man, I wish more yaoi had supernatural action and factions fighting one another and stuff. Mooooooore. I want to read more set in this universe, damn it. All of the creepy things in the storage room, man... There's a lot of material there. It's still marked as incomplete, so maybe we'll get some extras? I'm just bummed that we don't get more of this world. I liked this story SO MUCH MORE than her other full length, Feeding Lamb, which was just disturbing as fuck. I mean, well-written, but mostly just unpleasant given the nature of it. I much prefer her supernatural horror to her serial killer/gore horror.

In the Cage

Complete | Satou Sanayuki | 2018 released

Things resolved a little too easily for my tastes, but at least no one raped him into submission. I feel like this was on several lists or something that made me eager to read it, but I'm not sure now what it was that had me intrigued. It was decent enough, but nothing groundbreaking. At any rate, it was an enjoyable enough read, albeit flawed in its own ways. The art was usually pretty, though there was one shot where the alpha's neck is SO long like he turned into some sort of snake monster, and for the life of me, I do not see how anyone okayed that. It was scary.

Mobius Strip

Complete | sawamotosoji | 2000 released

You know, I really debated on my feelings for this one. The art is gorgeous, and I like the mind games and kinks, etc. I wasn't crazy about the rapey elements, even though they were very mild for yaoi. It was easier to forgive because the characters are supposed to be a little messed up, and it wasn't forceful like you usually see. It was all a little too convenient, but that's often how yaoi goes, and ultimately, the couple is supposed to be twisted, so the rough sex between them and the unhealthy obsession fits just fine. My problem is more with the many yaoi manga out there that contain similar themes but act like it's healthy and lovely. So that in mind, I really enjoyed the story. I can forgive the things that put me off, because I like the way that they fucked with each other, and I appreciated that there was a lot less beating around the bush. Plus, it's sooooo pretty. This art is amazing. I hope she draws a million more manga. I want to read it all. Oh, and piercings! I love the delinquent look, which I believe is what made me start reading this from the beginning. So sexy, ugh.

Sin of Heart

Ongoing | taoci pengke shaonian | 2000 released

Ooh, this looks like something I'd really like. Which means it'll probably let me down completely. But for now! I like that they have this history between them. I hope it's a solid story and not just a bunch of pathetic misunderstandings and/or rape-forgiveness. I'm intrigued, either way.

Devil's Thoroughbred

Complete | yamashita tomoko | 2012 released

Wtf, this is so gross. I know for a fact that I've read it before, but I couldn't recall the ending. Someone was gushing over how great and surprising it was, so I read it again. Not sure what they were seeing that I'm not, but it's pretty straight forward to me. Guy has a crush on another guy, violently rapes him and blackmails him, gets stabbed, then stockholm syndrome's his way into the guy's heart. But don't worry, it's funny because the guy hits him with a plant! This is such a disturbing way to treat something so awful. I would go down to one star, but I've read worse, and at least the uke doesn't get all squishy and starry-eyed. But seriously, gross. Also, what plot twist? I don't see any plot twist. The fact that he raped the guy because he liked him? That's like 90% of yaoi manga.
