You might want to start by asking what kind of animals your family is least scared of. Try and figure out if they're just scared or if it's an actual phobia because even if they can work on their phobias they will probably never really be comfortable around that animal. I know you said you like larger dog breeds, but for me a smart, little dog is the way to go since they make smaller messes and are easier to train. I currently have five dogs, a cat, a bird, and two tanks of fish. Since you don't have previous experience with animals I would suggest an animal that doesn't need training (potty training, tricks, etc.). Therefore, I would suggest fish that are easy to maintain, such as some guppies or barbs, or a small rodent that is low maintenance. reply
A pet is a huge financial responsibility, almost like having another child. theres vet costs, grooming costs, food, and even insurance to consider.
Please make sure you and your family is ready to take on a pet for the rest of their lives. I got my first puppy a year ago, and it was pretty tough at first.
