Actually, attraction to cartoon characters is called schediaphilia and it usually happens when we identify traits within a character that we can relate to or characteristics we would find appealing in an actual person. I think that knowing what you want is the best thing you can do for yourself no matter what. I'd say that you can try treating online dating as a way of experimenting/learning more about yourself and what you consider essential in a relationship IF you feel like you can take proper precautions.
