I'll try to list some that I didn't notice in other answers. Pride (2014) and MILK (2008) are great- both deal with activism and politics and are based on real life stories.
Hedwig And The Angry Inch (2001), this movie is such a fucking riot, it's so great, please watch it.

Recently "Portrait of a lady on fire" came out and i really enjoyed it. It's about a female painter who was hired to secretly make a portrait of a lady so they could have her marry to some guy. It's a slow burn and if you're not used to french movie pacing you'll clickoff.

But I'm a Cheerleader is a really good lesbian coming of age movie about a girl who's sent to a conversion camp and falls in love with another girl, but it's not sad at all it's more like a comedic parody with really unique and almost surreal visuals. 2 reply
There's the obvious- 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Call Me By Your Name' - but neither have the happiest of endings.
A couple of my favorites would be 'Princess Syd' and '3 Generations' (Also known as 'About Ray').
There's also a few amazing shows that feature a variety of LGBTQ+ characters- 'Sense8' (on Netflix) and 'Euphoria' (on HBO). reply
