It's annoying because it seems to be the rule and not the exception. People are very misguided when it comes to sexuality, especially in oppressed societies like the Asian ones usually are. What I find the most annoying is when a straight character falls in love with another guy but continues to identify as straight. They'll say something along the lines of "I'm straight, I just happened to fall in love with this particular person who's a guy". It happens in one of my favorite manga, Haru wo Daite Ita. It's really annoying and misleading. I honestly don't know if it's the straight x gay trope, the I like girls but I love you (a guy) cliché or just the authors genuinly not knowing/caring about sexuality.
However, I've read a few mangas where they actually say a character is bi or 'he swings both ways' so I guess this genre is slowly evolving an...... 3 reply
They usually don't explore the sexuality of the characters which is a shame. It's always the same pattern : The straight one falling in love with the same gender friend/nemesis and saying he's gay or "Not gay, just in love with one guy and it's you" and vis versa.
