do we fetishize gay?
once i got attacked on twitter for saying i like yaoi. many said yaoi fetishizes gay relationships and many yaois have problematic themes. when i said i was actually a lesbian myself they said it was more wrong to be of lgbt community yourself and tolerate such fetishization of gay relationships which are made by straight women for other straight women. some said yaoi is not a good representation it is actually a gross and unrealistic portrayal of mlm relationships, and it actually affect how gay people are treated in real life. what do you think?

in a sense, yes, it could be considered fetishization of gay men. the content in most yaoi mangas are of sexual nature and aimed more at straight women than actual gay men. i don’t think reading it is necessarily fetishizing gay men (yes, that is kind of contradicting my last statements), but it does cross a certain line when you begin connecting...... 1 reply

Some people I’ve seen say stuff like “I love gay people!” and end up trying to force the stereotypes of yaoi and bl onto real gay ppl. Honestly, I think it's no different from people getting off to mangas with straight couples. It's still an unrealistic representation of relationships. It's no different or worse just because the relationship is homosexual. I don't believe we do. No one in their right mind will read a yaoi and actually think this is what mxm relationships are like. Enjoy it for what it is: fiction. There is a lot of yaoi that's pretty bad imo but it's fiction. There are many genres of books/manga/manhwa that will offend people. You can't please everyone. I think it might be fetishized to a certain degree but the common thing is that these yaoi/ bl comics are designed for fantasized mlm relationships. There’s a difference between fantasy and reality. People should be able to differentiate the two. I feel like some comics spread awareness as to what happens to how gay people are treated and others ...... reply

Possibly? it really depends on what aspect of yaoi you like. Do you like it just because they're gay? Do you relate more to yaoi for it being loosely from a man's 'perspective'? Or, are you just sick of the typical shoujo and josei plot? There are more questions that can be asked.

Personally, I never fetishize a gay person that I meet in real life. I find it rude and irrational.I guess you could say it's messed up on how straight women make the yaoi relationships. But it is just fiction. It is just like writing a book. If people who read yaoi actually go out into the real world and say/do gross things to gay men...I sincerel...... reply
