we are friends but just that. he knows i'm gay but there hasn't been anything special. but sometimes he would say or little things that would make me feel special but then again at other times he wouldn't reply my text for hours. is it too naïve of me to hope for something?

Yeah, you shouldn't hope for much. Just stay friends especially because he's most likely straight. And idk about you and your friend's friendship dynamic but my friends and I go like 3 days without responding to each other and that doesn't mean we have some hidden vendetta or resentment towards each other.
