Is reading BL bad? Does it fetishize gay men?
Does it really generally fetishize gay men? I thoroughly understand that a lot of BL material portray sex heavily especially on the Yaoi genre. A more typical position as to why reading BL is bad is because it fetishizes gay men. Does it really fetishize them? Is the fandom that toxic? (I have a vague idea about this, but what I find problematic is the shipping of irl people as well as the disregard on the normalization of rape and dubcon.) Hence, Is reading BL bad?
I read BL and have been invested of it since 2017. Now, I've been curious if this interest of mine in reading BL is really healthy. I acknowledge that like other stories in the market (whether it be gay or straight), it is still just a fiction. So, I am curious if reading BL is really fetishizing gay men and if people should stop reading and making them in general. thanks.
It is fiction. It doesn't exist, so people particularly those who are gay who see themselves as the characters(because the characters are also gay) will say that this is fetishizing because they see themselves in the characters which is wrong. Because your not a handsome, tall, rich, possessive CEO are you? No your not, you are sitting on your couc...... 3 reply

No, it’s fiction as long as you don’t push stereotypes on mlm and know where to draw the line between fiction and reality there is no issue. Again bl is representation but it isn’t accurate so don’t think I anything in bl applies to reality 1 reply
yaoi itself was literally porn created by straight women for straight women. whether its fictional or not, yes yaoi and bl have its bad aspects. is it fetishizing gay people if you simply read it, no. but what is fetishizing is when people start comparing these characters to REAL gay men, go out and objectify them, and start actually obsessing over...... 2 reply
This may be a slightly less popular opinion but I will give my 2cents as a queer man. If we are talking yaoi specifically : There is always something fetishistic about smut. Shounen ai? Generally less sex focused, so there is a less of that in my experience.
And yeah you can argue that "its written by fujos who get off to gay porn and fetishize gay...... 1 reply

if people can't accept the difference between reality and fiction then that's on them, and I've seen the bad side of people even going so far as to say they want to be a trans guy just so they can experience gay sex, and as a trans guy, what the fuck... but I think that read...... reply
I mean, as long as you know what is fiction and what’s reality and not being Toxic then that’s fine. You should read whatever you want and no one should tell you what or what to not read, it’s your own choice. reply
If you’re doing the “omg I ship you guys!” To mfs irl then yes you have a problem. It’s fine to enjoy good romance but you should do everything in moderation. Some chicks on this site jerk it to only gay comics and say all kinds of gross shit about the characters. If you’re being obsessive over gay relationships in comics then you probabl...... reply
