what are some cultural shocks that you guys have experienced? also, do you guys think pretty privilege is a thing? have you guys experienced it?
it was a year ago. my family and i had a 3 weeks vacation to the philippines. it was lowkey creepy since a lot of people were staring at me whenever we cross a street or just walk. i asked my filipino cousin if there was something on my face, since i felt hella conscious. she said no and that it was probably because im eye-catching and im a “mestiza”..? i genuinely laughed at her, since no one in the us stares at you if you’re “eye-catching”. they would usually just tell you straight up if you look good or whatnot. ive also noticed in the philippines that people (especially the guards) tend to interact with you more if youre good looking. its prolly just me tho..
This is such a privileged answer but poverty.
This has been a shock for me in Morocco but also a bit in southern Italy, although by far not as bad.
Infrastructure is just totally different and there's so many people on the streets, begging and offering cheap items on the beach. Even children begging and a mother with a baby on the street.
