Representation of other POCs take
Ok I'm curious on this topic, anyways there are ppl demanding POC representation in manhwas. I'm not talking about shitty ass racist representation but people demanding manhwas to be more diverse and some ppl are mad it isn't more of that.
It's like genshin tho that's a diff topic since its a fantasy word but modern word where the story just takes place in this Asian country. Cause for me "uh it's korean" personally, I don't think ppl should be so mad cus the story often takes place in just Korea which obv POC can live there but it's still not the same as America. You're still considered a foreigner despite living there your whole life.
I can't seem to get to demand that in a place where 90% of the population is still korean. Again im talking about a cast having more other POC characters. Like in American tv show, people demand this as if Korea is like that when it isn't.
I don't know what or where you heard this but I think people are demanding the good representation of POC in historical manhwas where they're called barbaric, unclassy, etc.
Edit: The answer got cut off.
It's called fiction for a reason, can't someone represent POC in a not so stereotype and racist way? Society needs to understand that race/colour ...... 1 reply
As someone from the other "POC" community (this is such a bullshit label but westerners love new buzzwords so gotta go with this), i think we don't need representation, but I also don't want these east asian authors using our culture and motifs without doing proper research. Either you do it correctly or you don't do it at all. Idk how in the era o...... 1 reply
The time they make Arabic men stop being sex slave masters is the day I'll live. I'm not Arabic but I'm sick of that trope in certain historical manhwas. Can't yall make one where they actually fall in love without the girl or bottom sold to them?? Like historical wise (correct me if I'm wrong) they were mostly minors and is literally rape-culture ...... 1 reply
Personally, I don't think POC diversity in manhwa is too important because of how homogeneous of a country South Korea is, compared to the US, where diversity in media js far more important due to the variety of people and cultures that live here. However that being said, I would like it if authors included other POC characters, then they'd better ...... reply
As a "poc" person I don't see any need for it, most manhwa take place in Korea itself which, as far as I know, doesn't have the same range of people and ethnicities than country's like the USA do.
The only thing I ask for, is the story's that for the storys that do include "POC" characters, do it with respect. being for X country is not a personal...... 1 reply
I mean i have only seen people ask for good POC rep if there's any. Like dont add it if you dont want it, but if youre gonna do it dont push the most racist stereotype out there.
There's even authors who purposely write their stories in settings that allow for diversity yet you can clearly tell they didnt even do a Google seach of the culture or wh...... reply
'demanding' for other POC representation in manhwas doesnt make that sense that much to me tbh. artists are more inclined to create and using inspiration in the environment that theyre familiar in. that doesnt mean that manhwas with diverse characters isnt a bad thing!
i just think that korean artists are free to draw characters that look like th...... reply
Idk, my attitude in general is that it's good (even if it's not necessarily 1:1 with reality) to include people from diverse backgrounds. I don't think stories should necessarily have to be about the average citizen. You'd be missing out on different narratives if it were that way (and, like, just because there's less people it doesn't mean they do...... reply
Unpopular opinion as a POC, I actually don't like see recent POC representation because I feel it 90% didn't come about naturally because the authors or creators wanted themselves/ had it in their plans authentically. I hate people force story or race changes I didn't sign up for it dog. With the recent antics of people demanding black representati...... reply
A while back I saw a similar complaint, but with manga.
Even if manga/manwha/manhua has become more prevalent all over the world, their primary audience continues to be their home populace.
That’s like me asking for authors that have stories set in the US to set them in LA because they’re always in NYC and I’m in LA.
Even in places like th...... reply
