OG fujos - how did bl change over the years?
Im fairly new to bl (i started reading last year december) since my friend wanted to show me some stories and see if I’d like them. I asked her how long had she’d been into bl and said since she was in grade school. crazy i know.
im only asking this question on mangago since i want to hear about what bl used to be like and how it possibly changed over the past years especially since the pandemic.
How has bl changed and how has it stayed the same?
Hmmm well there are still shota storys but the difference is now is that back then there was at least a plot and now it’s just rape/smut. Uhmmmm 90% of stuff is smut with a dash of plot or no plot at all. It’s mostly manhwas. Lots and lots of rape. No real creativity. Back then plots were all different instead of debt pay and sex slave contract. All manhwas was actually more unique because now all manhwas is just copy paste, they weren't also afraid to make their story plot focused instead of sex. reply
I've been reading bls since i was like 11 but the biggest improvement is actually the story telling, a lot of older bls are really melodramatic and badly paced, people will always have nostalgia for the old stories they read but shit wasn't all that good. Art used to be more angular. Its much softer now. There's also less flowers on emotional panels but I think that goes for all manga lmao. To be honest with the rise of manhwa and these ultra long quickly produced stories, the overall quality of bl has dropped. There's still a lot of good stuff being made but there is just SO MUCH of it. I just wish...... 2 reply

In my opinion it really depends. I feel like a large number of BL consistented of fanfiction so to me it definitely seems like we're getting more original content (I could've just been more interested in fanfiction and didn't notice the original stories as much though). There’s more animes that are adapted from bl mangas in compare to like 10 or so years ago.
I used to scramble through so many sports and bromance animes to look for any bl bait but now I’m in my 20’s and I watched so many new bl animes.
Plus they picked stories that aren’t rapey so that’s a bonus. I’m so glad to still be alive to see �...... reply
ive been reading bl since 2016, also using mangago since then too (only made an account in 2020 lol), and ive noticed a few changes over the years.
- using the word "yaoi" is not frowned upon on mainstream media anymore. this is a recent development probably just in the last year or so. there was a big stigma about saying yaoi in fears of being br...... 2 reply
Ok so I read more BL on webtoons, and I have very poor memory of titles and what read manga wise. I do recall the discourse over calling yourself a fujo in the mid 2010's. (I know it extends from before that)(You were essentially a cornball, fetishizer and nasty ) I was like 10 or 11 when I started reading.

I fell like there was more of a power imbalance going on. Basically, it was usually the bigger guy and the smaller guy.
Nowadays, you have a lot of BL where both characters are build similarly, and there also a bit of defying expectations where the smaller guy is the top.
