buying but not reading
is it too performative to buy manga but not read them ? i prefer reading online here, but i also love physical books and it helps decorating my room. is it unnecessary to buy manga just for decoration ?
i’ll still buy them, but would you? or its too performative
'Performative' is an overused term nowadays, everyone 'performs' and is an imposter to the greater person they seek to be. But anyways, no it's not uncommon to use tools or objects as decoration regardless of their original purpose. Of course it's 'unnecessary' but it hurts no one and if it makes you happy, definitely do it!

Curating a physical collection is not performative, it's what you care about and want to preserve. There's no telling for how long the manga will be available online, after all, since we're all sliding into a subscription economy where we pay for temporary access, not ownership.
Buy those books! reply
I prefer to read online too and if I really like a story ill buy the physical to support who made it. I do read it like once but reading online is just better (wont buy the online verison bc it seems like waste of money if im not going to get something physical..) i dont really think its performative bc you buy the series you like no? 1 reply
I personally read online because I can read faster that way, I have no patience whatsoever plus it's available to me whenever. As for physicals, I like the feeling of owning something dear to me and as long as I have involved myself in and understood it, I believe it's okay! Performative is more when you're just forcing yourself to do something for...... reply
not at all. it's pretty common among the book reader community where people read on kindle and then buy the book if they want it in their personal library/shelf. reply
I don't know about performative or whatever, but I do kinda think it's a waste of money to buy something you don't read/watch/play/use/whatever. Especially since some mangas are expensive, too. And keeping them clean and dust-free is hella annoying, too. 1 reply
i mean youre still reading the manga so youre not larping, but then why even get the manga if youre not gonna read it physically.. especially if youre thinking of getting a limited edition one or something 1 reply
nah it’s not performative. i’m the same, i read online first since i’m picky to what i read, but i still buy the physical copy sometimes on my local book store/online to have on my shelf as a collection. reply
