Wish you’d bring THAT exact same energy you use to nitpick BL and demand changes and apply it to GL too! Like "we need men in GL who are actual characters and people… NOT just plot devices, rivals or annoying obstacles standing in the girls’ way". Bet you wouldn’t say that though.
And honestly? I’m fed up seeing this double standard play out every single day. Half the loud complainers never open their mouths about how almost NO proper queer representation exists at all in mainstream straight‑focused like shoujo or josei, zero pressure there, nothing. But oh it’s also funny how fast I hear people screaming “we need more lesbians appearing in BL stories!”… yet why there's no one anyone asks for more gay men in GL worlds.
Always the same line too: “BL needs more women characters, where are the girls?” Like… hello?? You picked up a story made specifically to center the romance and lives of two men and then you go everywhere complaining “but where are the women??” Imagine doing that to GL or straight romance and acting like it’s a flaw, ridiculous.
From my own experience? It never feels like you actually care about balanced rep or fair writing, it feels like BL is treated like public property everyone gets to police, while other genres get a free pass. We get our space and suddenly it’s “missing something”… meanwhile nobody cares we’re invisible everywhere else.
I'm sad. I thought we finally got a gay man defending straight women who read BL. But it's just another gay man complaining about stories written by women in a genre started by women.
