I've been seeing a lot of discussions on tt and other platforms about omega verse lately, and I'm curious what everyone here thinks.
Some people claim that omega verse is inherently misogynistic because omegas are often portrayed as more feminine, go into heat (which some compare to menstruation), and are written as needing an alpha to protect or claim them. Others go even further and say omega verse, or even BL in general, is just glorified rape. which has led to a lot of interesting debates and, in some cases, homophobic comments. I'm interested in hearing different perspectives. Do you think Omegaverse is inherently misogynistic, or does it depend on how it's written? Is it just a fictional trope that can be explored in many different ways, or do you think some of the criticism is valid? And what are your thoughts on the claims that BL or Omegaverse are "just rape"?
I'm genuinely curious to hear opinions from different sides of the discussion. (=・ω・=)
Omegaverse started cause fandom just want to see mpreg. And the pattern on how "omegas" were perceived heavily references to how irl woman are treated. Tho this just steams on how often this setting is used. Oppressed mc's(wc are usually the omega) is just more popular in terms of world building. It helps build the angst. However, there is no "official heirarchy". Omegas can become the top genes in one story or the oppressed in the other.
In terms of kink it is also popular, cause the idea of natural slick and heat u can't control? Sounds like a start of a porno movie. Rape on the other hand, is again just another popular trope added in the typical oppressed setting. Writers wants to add angst, and what best method in a world setting where male have no control over their desires? Exactly.
The problem with the growing fandom is that they mostly only read manhwa, cause it's colored and the panels are easy in the eye. Most kr artists/authors also tends to just mass produce whatever is trending(money over creativity). So the idea of creating their unique setting is lost. They never even explore the idea of nesting or even a supposedly unique scent omegas produce during pregnancy. The supposed "animal" instict is also gone
Mangakas on the other hand have more world variations for omegaverse. Heck some even explores work benefits for being an omega and exploit that. But alas, since most readers doesnt explore that side they think kr omegaverse is the norm
Honestly, I hate the omegaverse one because it is pretty misogynistic and two the glorification of rape.
For the first example, menstruation is turned into heat but in heat your sex drives goes through the roof and you are half unconscious, like a drunken person. It leaves them VULNERABLE. That type of vulnerability fits the male gaze therefore its very misogynistic indeed.
Another example leads onto the first, it’s glorifying rape by the omegas vulnerability. Being weakened by your own body is something that happens during menstruation but this level of weakness is one where its extremely unrealistic.
And this is my other unpopular reasoning why I hate it. So basically, a male omega is biologically male but it inherited female anatomy such as the bones for pregnancy, a womb, uterus, and the female aesthetic. So why not just make them intersex? Intersex people exist so why create a terrible concept instead? They didn’t include intersex because the omegaverse is a fetish and couldn’t except an intersex person intrude their “Yaoi, boy love” stories.
Lastly, the omegaverse is a heteronormative way to conclude gay people, where same sex omega x alpha is justified for a romance because its natural for reproduction (like where homophobic straight people say being gay is wrong because its not natural for not having reproduction=inheritly misogonistic). But whenever you read same sex omega x omega/sames sex alpha x alpha its an issue in the omegaverse world. The bystanders compain over it not being an alpha or an omega in the relationship—just like our homophobic world.
So in the end, the omegaverse is full of shit just like the creators and the readers.
Yeah I'd say. It's gender essentialism at its finest. Gay omegaverse is only different from straight omegaverse (people here tend to forget about that exists too) in that the omega has the face of a guy. It's valid criticism but thats just the nature of the genre. Also, I wouldn't say that it's 'just rape' but it definetly likes blurring the lines of consent which is why personally I don't fw it. I find it funny when they make in-universe laws about it being illegal for an alpha to touch an omega in heat or whatever which to me is like putting a bandaid on a limb YOU severed.
anyone who thinks bl is "just rape" either lacks reading comprehension, is blinded by homophobia or has never actually read any bl that's not yaoi. omegaverse is misogynistic in nature because it reinforces gender inequality but just in a fictional scenario where "women" aren't being oppressed, but rather men with feminine traits. i'd say it's just a way for women (including me) to engage lightheartedly with the dynamic without being put off by the fact that women experience almost identical discrimination irl. these are my takes.
