Critique popular manhwa
What are some criticism you have for popular manhwa or manhwa you found underwhelming especially with all the hype it received? Here are mine. share your criticism on certain manhwa and thoughts.
Red String Quest: too much sex. The reincarnation/fated meetings hook is a genuinely good idea , the ache of almost recognizing someone across lifetimes has real emotional potential, but the story keeps defaulting to sex scenes instead of building that recognition out. It ends up feeling like the central conceit is just an excuse to reset the leads into bed every arc rather than something the plot actually explores.
Reverse Thinking : too much sexual violence. It’s leaning on non con/dubcon as its main shorthand for “this relationship is dark and unhealthy,” when that’s something a psychological thriller should be able to establish through the characters’ behavior and dynamic instead. Repeating the same device over and over doesn’t deepen the psychology, it just repeats the shock.
No Returns After Use: it’s slop, straightforwardly badly written. Not a “the premise is uncomfortable but well executed” problem, the actual writing and pacing feel careless, like it’s coasting on the shock of the setup instead of doing craft work to make any of it land. It’s one of those “guilty pleasure” manhwa.
Yang Ilwoo and I :
okay but underwhelming, and this premise has been done better elsewhere. The specific issue: Baekhee is written as headstrong, but he keeps tolerating Gyeom’s manipulation, Gyeom uses the abusive father trauma to keep Baekhee dependent on him, and Baekhee just… lets that happen, repeatedly, with no real pushback that matches his supposed personality. That inconsistency reads like the author is stretching the angst out for chapter count rather than following the character logically.
Die in My Arms: edgy and cliché. The whole premise runs on shock value (yandere ex) without building past that hook into anything structurally distinct. It’s genre furniture, the possessive ex, the fatalistic framing , assembled rather than developed.
Backlight: shallow plot, and the antagonist doesn’t really contribute anything meaningful, backstory never gets fleshed out.
