pretty sure it's an intentional marketing and editorial strategy to come up with the most mind-numbingly infuriating (or just irritating) plotlines along similar formulas to hook (ideally, paying) readers. low effort and risk, high reward. anger is a very effective emotional chord to play for driving continued engagement with a thing, as we can all......   1 reply

most series are constrained by their budget, so they have to decide where they'll deploy more effort and resources for the most impact. some series don't get enough of a budget to really do well at that. what's holding a lot of anime back right now are industry forces and production demands, not the efforts of the artists working on them, who are o......   reply

I've been reading since 2007-08 at least, and I'd say the complaining about "bad" stuff is good, because that means there's demand for stuff beyond the tired, toxic tropes of yesteryear. yeah, you can filter out the stuff you don't want better than you used to, but it's still good to have positive demand for better options. not to mention, it's goo......   reply

my beef with that whole storyline was how much it centered endeavor to the exclusion of the rest of the family. there's so little of their perspective and individual relationships to him and each other that whatever emotional or personal journey they took to end up "forgiving" him and coming together at the end was super unsatisfying to me. like y......   reply

I was definitely using mangafox as my main site around 2007-08 (seeing the "hosted on mangafox" banner on older manga really takes me back lol) and coming across this site sometime after that looking for bl that wasn't on mangafox. I've been using this site longer than I've had an account, that's for sure.   reply

depiction doesn't equal endorsement, but the choices made in depicting things matters to how it lands. also going to add: impact vs intent. sometimes people mean well, or don't have malicious intentions for whatever they're trying to communicate. doesn't mean they can't cause insult or harm, and the response to feedback is often telling.   reply

I feel you on that. I've been finding BL manhwa refreshing since the "roles" aren't always mapped so neatly according to physical and behavioral stereotypes. Not to mention that there's often more visual/aesthetic variety too. There's even a fair amount of BL manga that don't stick to the usual, though a lot seems to fly under the radar. If you re......   reply

when a character has "dressed up" and their partner is starry eyed and going gaga over them but all they did was put on a white button down shirt tucked into black pants and nondescript dress shoes and maaayyybe slicked back their hair. and you could say the over-the-top reaction is warranted because the character doesn't usually dress well and is ......   1 reply

the behavior/mindset that people call "porn addiction" (or even sex addiction) doesn't match the criteria for addiction that's used to recognize gambling or drug addiction. there's no dependence or tolerance involved. instead, there's research out there that says that religiosity or moral conflict over porn consumption is a more relevant factor to ......   1 reply

it sounds like you experience some emotional release/catharsis, or are living vicariously through the actions of those immoral characters, which isn't an unusual thing to do. many people read or otherwise engage with fiction to step outside of themselves and their lives, see through a new and unusual perspective and all that. but however wild and i......   1 reply

thanks for bringing this up, because it gets so easily overlooked - or purposely glossed over - whenever these topics come up. defenders of whatever nefarious BS under discussion always want to say "no real human being was harmed" to excuse and wave away any scrutiny of the thing they're doubling down on, without any awareness or cognizance that no......   reply

what would be really interesting is omegaverse that was more biologically grounded. pheromones for communication and getting away from the gender/sex essentialism by throwing in the messiness and complexity of real life biology (lots of things aren't strictly binary, things can be ambiguous or a mix etc). stuff like that.   1 reply

I'll get to the main point of this post in a second, but I'm mystified by the use of "deprived" here. like, I'm used to seeing it in sentences like "the captive was deprived of adequate food, water, and fresh air" or "neglectful parents deprived a child of an education", so I'm left wondering what the intended word is supposed to be here. op is fee......   reply

I'm always down for new and different approaches in a genre filled with cliches and formulaic stories, so I support your grievance in principle. thinking it over, I think most of the stories I've read and liked gave input from both characters even if it's primarily from the pov of one character. that said, this is a real rabbit hole of a question........   reply
