"does instagram translate palestinian to terrorist arabic english" A bit of context: someone told me this is happening (or was happening). I wanted to see if there's any backlash. Meta issued some faux apology about this "error". Just thinking about it makes me angry again.   1 reply

I love bounty, omg. Literally have some in the cupboard right now. I remember there used to be bounty ice cream as well, but that was discontinued (I think?). Gotta say tho I don't like danish butter cookies at all. Never liked them, even as a kid. LU Petit Écolier cookies though... THOSE reign supreme, but they're not available in the stores near......   reply

I find the part on how they respond immediately to someone else to be the worst, tbh. It shows that it's not that they can't respond or have nothing to say - it shows that if it's you sending the message, they choose to not respond. And that's terrible. I hate to ask this, but are you sure they don't have another group chat without you? And I agre......   1 reply

I'm fine, but... I'm grading the reports of students so that they would know what they got for their final research papers on Monday. There is one student who I know could have performed so much better, but because the paper he submitted isn't so good, I can't give him the overall course grade that I honestly think would reflect his level of knowle......   1 reply

The way he eats. If you chew with your mouth open and make a lot of noise, "us" is just never going to happen. A conversational ick is when they reek of the desperation to impress, to the point of bragging or name-dropping or talking about how much money they spend. Or (war flashbacks from this one) talking about how he's better than his brother (......   1 reply

If you view your future as an abstract, unspecific thing then I think it's honestly understandable that you don't feel motivated, and don't know why you should try. What motivates me (well, motivated as a student, and continues to do so even afterwards) is a standard of living that I want to enjoy: work as little as possible in a job that doesn't ......   reply

In kindergarten years and years ago (in the 90s, lol) I convinced the rest of the kids that not only were Biker Mice real, but that I knew them IRL because they worked for my dad. Like, this means nothing to anyone else here but it's such a fond memory, especially since other kids would beg me to try riding their bikes to check if they were "Biker......   1 reply

I prefer dark, but with either a nature ambiance (rain) or a horror story narration (there are two narrators on youtube/spotify that I enjoy listening to while trying to sleep) for sound.   1 reply

(Jinx related) I hate Potato. I think this is unpopular, because I've seen a lot of people love him? I stopped enjoying the plot a while ago because Dan's suffering just kept going on and on, but kept briefly skimming over the updates to see if even an ounce of remorse was going to manifest with JJ. So I was intrigued again when Dan finally left, ......   1 reply

one of the things that helped me during my phd when the days just didn't seem to have enough hours, and I was constantly burnt out, was this: 1. use an audio recorder on your phone to idea dump while taking a walk outside/on the treadmill. So e.g. I'd do all the brainstorming while in motion. Speak loudly and clearly. 2. Once I feel all my ideas ......   1 reply

My final year of PhD. It was the busiest time for research + the thesis that needed to be edited and then defended. At the same time I had a part time job teaching in that university, and a full-time job teaching in another university. Plus at the time I was living quite far from either university so I'd have to leave home around 5:30 to catch the ......   reply

Reading the answers here is absolutely horrifying. I'm sorry that so many have had to go through so much - the shit yall went through is something that should not have happened. I teach econ at a small private university, and while most of the faculty are fantastic, there's always that handful who treats teaching like a power fantasy fulfillment o......   reply

What I have noticed screws people over the most when presenting is thinking that they have to rememer EVERYTHING. Your audience will not know if there is something you forgot to mention, and if it's something they need to know, they will ask you (and answering is easier at that point). So don't stress yourself over needing to remember every small t......   reply

I don't know if this counts as a trope, but when the story starts focusing too much on the side couple. I'm there for the MC and the MC's rights (and wrongs), and inevitably messy relationships, idgaf abt the side characters falling in love with each other.   reply
