Well, this certainly isn’t civil, but I’ll try to put my two cents in without being a dick about it like some others.
Not really just “two cents” if I am honest. This is gonna be a HUGE ramble, so honestly most should prob ignore this if they see it. Anyways.
Murder is certainly bad. Murder of innocent people to be exact. Very much it depends on the person, and your own morals. The fact that the main lead is considered someone “bad” and to be “replaced” is a possible question of these morals. A murder, rapist, child sexual assailant, animal abuser, etc, perhaps deserves to be killed, in just my personal opinion. However, you can be considered a murderer for multiple reasons. Maybe you murdered your abuser. Maybe you made a mistake out of your control, but still was directly of your actions which caused death to another. Maybe you were put into a highly stressed and emotionally irate state, where human rationality would not be at your consciousness, and you end up acting on instinct. Regardless, we can always say “who are we to judge?” But humans judge other humans every day.
In this case, its fiction. Humans have always been fascinated by death and those who have caused death. It’s a weird double standard, but yes, we, not just “”yaoi”” readers, as much as I despise that word, are not the only ones who have this dilemma. To some of us it isn’t a dilemma at all, it’s just how we are.
Biggest example I can use, as someone deeply within the community of such, is Modern Warfare 2. There are heavy ships with the characters Ghost and Soap. Both being enlisted in the military and having killed many. Regardless, much of the community does not enjoy or tolerate the romanticization of rape or any such things. That’s just how it is.
The other point I have is that many have dealt with rape and sexual assault in real life. I myself am a CSA survivor, so I especially feel disgust in anything relating to underage sexualization to the point of feeling violent. Not many have faced a close to call to being murdered. Though. Some even would prefer being killed over being raped or assaulted sexually. Far too many take their lives because of experiencing it.
In my personal opinion, rape is worse than murder, because it will haunt you for life potentially. It can make one consider taking things into their own hands, and leaving this world. It can make people become insanely untrusting of others, antisocial, paranoid, etc.
Murder is bad because it is the end of you life, full stop. Many would say they’d rather be assaulted as well so they can continue to live, but that is your perspective and view on things. We’re humans, so we differ in that account.
But getting down to the romanticism of murder vs rape, one of these things are romanticized because of its morbid yet interesting, to some, attractive allure. Someone who takes life is undoubtedly interesting, good or bad.
Another one of these things are romanticized because of a twisted fetishization towards control and abuse. In this case, yaoi communities have many supporters if it because it’s even easier to enjoy gay men, a very different entity to a straight woman, being depicted as abusers and the abused. It allows the reader to separate themselves and feel more comfortable with enjoying rape content. This is not assumptions, this is what fujos have publicly admitted.
Rape does not bring interest either. It tells you everything you need to know about the character or person who has gained that title, rapist that is.
A murderer is something morbid but interesting. Who did they murder, why did they murder / what was the intent, was there signs they would do it, does the way they did it symbolize something?
But I suppose most importantly, when I witness an artist or writer who is into murder boys and manic fuckwads, they tend to enjoy the very fictional nature of it. “Crazy murder man falls for unfazed dude who stumbled upon him mid stabbing and just watched. Now they fuck.” While on the other hand, those of them who enjoy rape tend to enjoy very realistic depictions of it, victim shaming the one being abused, saying the rapist character should be even more abusive to them, celebrating the cruelty and disgusting mindset of a rapist. OR. These people treat rape like its no big deal. Its just another form of sex to them, completely choosing to not see it for what it really is.
People into murder themes know murder is bad and rarely support it. I can’t say the same for people who enjoy rape themes.
Dubious-consent is a bit of a different story. I know some who are masochistic and enjoy the concept of being “forced” to do services and what not, but that’s why its “dubious”. They want to have the forceful nature of it within their boundaries, but essentially are consenting to it or reading about characters who are in similar cases. My own boyfriend is this way. That is not rape romanticization, it’s just masochism, for those who may be questioning that.
Perhaps I have a heavy opinion on this because I am a gay man myself, and seeing how much gay men are fetishized into rapists makes me deeply disturbed, but I myself enjoy a good edgy murderer theme. So yeah. My morals aren’t confused. They are what they are. Murder is fine fictionally if theyre not trying to fucking convince us that a murderer of innocents is actually to be sympathized with and forgiven. Enjoy the morbidity of it. Just be raw.
In no case ever should a rapist be enjoyed for who he is, let alone put into some sob story to make you feel bad for him. He should be wiped from the earth, real or fictional. End of story.

it was probably easier to 'grasp' it since we didn't actually see the characters murdering anybody. we haven't seen them actually do it. of course it was hinted with the stalker, but the author didn't show us how the guy went about killing him did it?

THE MURDERS makes sense because thats part of the plot, its the reason why the ml is even targeted in the first place because he supposedly killed people (did or did not its not clear yet)
