Ain is Lord Ian Sheleg, yes. As to why exactly he is doing this, up till the current translation it wasn't fully revealed, but also could be tied to reasons that would be a bigger spoiler if I reveal but you'll learn pretty early on about Ain/Ian. The reveal of the fact he's lord Ian Sheleg is pretty early on too we won't dwell too much on the current dynamic.

So basically this is from my understanding and my theory up until the latest translated chapter.

What confused me the most is the fact that I felt that Ain behaved too arrogantly for a lord/noble, and with the lack of pride of a servant still. Turns out it's bec he's both. He is an illegitimate child and in the north you're prohibited from committing adultery after marriage, but also if you do sleep with someone before marriage and the woman gets pregnant they HAVE to get married. "There are no illegitimate children in the north" is a saying Ian always says. Well. He is one, his mother was a southerner who came to the north and Ian's father impregnated her then abandoned her with a promise of returning, but he never did. He went and got married to another noble lady and had a daughter. Ian's given name by his mother was Ain.

Ain knew his father would never return pretty early on, and when he told his mother at a certain point about it, as a wakeup call (i think he was around 9-10) she hung herself. So, he became alone, he hated his father, and he lived in the streets doing odd things, being a servant and a mercenary and a whore, whatever he could get by, until he learned some street smarts and business, managed to buy some mines and amass huge wealth, and when the Sheleg family was at the brink of financial collapse he introduced himself as his father's estranged illegitimate child.

Ofc, because he's a life boat, his father welcomed him with open arms and gave him the noble name Ian, then he was later recognized as the heir, much to his sister's dismay.

Thing is, from Ian's pov, his sister Yekatrerina is a very pitiful child who's plagued by paranoid and abandoned issues and the overly suspicious nature of him. But I don't even trust his inner monologue because I do believe she is right in thinking that later on her parent's death had smth to do with him.

Now jumping to whyy exactly is he doing this to Michele. That confused me a lot, but I'll paste my own comment under the latest translated chapter that brainstormed this:

"Alright, now that I’m caught up, I want to voice some of my thoughts cause this had me feeling a multitude of emotions haha

I think I’m starting to understand why Ian disguised himself as a servant. That was initially the most confusing thing to me, because there was no need to do that if his purpose was to see if Michele is a nice person and not some pompous spoiled brat of the south marrying for the wealth and opportunity. When you factor in Ian’s past, it starts to make sense, though also not fully. Was he trying to prove that a noble would fall for anyone and consider it a fling then go marry off someone else? That had he been a woman, he would’ve been pregnant, and that he would’ve been abandoned with a child just like his mother was? Did Michele’s words about taking responsibility for the child confuse him? But if so, why did he think had Michele insisted on running away with ‘Ain’ he would’ve killed him in some inn because a "disobedient dog isn’t worthy of petting?"

I think, imo, that Ian is at war with himself, and he’s taking it out on Michele. Part of him longs for the proof that he could be loved, even at his lowest, and wants to bask in the warmth of being accepted as someone worthy of affection rather than simply a vile bastard or a cruel man. Someone who sees his true self, because from the flashbacks you can tell he was a deeply caring person. The other part just absolutely vehemently loathes the nobles for what he had to endure because of them, and unlike what he claims, I do believe he had some hand in his father’s death, even if not directly. I believe some part of him loathes Michele simply for him being a noble, and expects to be discarded or meeting a similar betrayal as his mother did.

It’s as Michele said, it’s like he almost wants him to cheat, just to prove that all nobles are the same and it’s pointless to believe in genuine love and affection, that he was right to be manipulative and wary, and that he should never be faulted for making Michele’s life difficult. His manipulative nature is a form of survival and defense, and all that his actions prove to me as I read is just him trying desperately to grasp at straws to excuse his own behavior to someone who he desperately wants to believe truly lives him but he’s too afraid to believe.

He’d rather show his rotten nature and have himself hated to go “Aha! I knew it! He only liked me when he felt superior to me! All nobles are the same!” than believe someone can truly be kind to someone like him."

Yea thanks for coming to my ted talk and sorry for the long ass reply! I'm too hooked

I believe Ian never intended to even marty Michele. You'll learn really soon too that, during the hunting the rabbit chapter, when Michele was unaware, Ian had the rifle trained over his head as he walked, contemplating shooting him. He would've claimed it an unfortunate accident; southerners hardly survive in the north anyway.

He went to that mansion with the expectations of meeting a typical noble who he would have some fun with but will probe every conception he has of nobles and there's no need to get someone like that to begin with. BUT! Michele is shattering all his expectations, as you can see in the manhwa he gets frozen/shocked looks and it's just Ian being confused about Michele. When Michele later confesses to Ain as a servant and wants to run away and not get married, I believe Ian was at his peak confusion.
    1) that a noble would have no qualms on running away with a servant, and giving his love to them
    2) he loves me... Me, at my lowest, a mere servant. I can be loved :')
    3) wtf do you mean he has no qualms on running away with a servant and abandoning his betrothed who has no fault in this and will now be betrayed?

And since Ain ISSSS said noble, he was like ok ok if he insists I'll run away with him as Ain, reach an inn, kill him there, and claim it an unfortunate accident. A disobedient dog doesn't deserve petting, which means a husband who dares to betray his wife/betrothed is undeserving of keeping. LIKE BRO THAT'S LITERALLY YOUR CAREFULLY CURATED PLAN.

Mind you, you'll immediately tell that Ian is a very VERY emotionally manipulative person and he's shameless about it. He isn't trying to hide his amusement in manipulating Michele and playing him like a fiddle, feeding and taking advantage of his naivete and kind nature. Sadly, Michele is a collateral in whatever the fuck Ian is working for in his revenge plan. He's a collateral and an oddity/Question mark still because with all Ian's bravado he really has no idea what to do with him, and he is denying himself that warmth as well.

I don't dislike Ian, the translator adores him, so I am guessing there is more to him yet to be revealed which will amend for his horrible treatment and manipulation of poor Michele.

    You're welcome!!!

I think the issue is that he KNOWS Michele is a good guy, it's what causing him the most anguish haha. He is like well. I can't kill him now *crosses arms* and I can't abandon him *crosses arms* and he is ruining my image as a strong ruthless man *crosses arms* and he fucks me well *crosses arms* now my plan of killing him and retuning home with a shrug and continuing my revenge plan is shattered by a boy 10-14 years younger than me who looks up at me with blinking misty doe eyes and makes me unbearably scared of the possibility of being betrayed like my mother, rather than disdainful at the concept.

He may think himself a mastermind but he truly is such a pitiful soul lmao
