The running away to America plot line was a bit frustrating but the beginning, war conflict and ending are so strong that it still makes this manhua a really good read. Also I adore how it follows real world historical periods and is not in a fantasy world, I was pleasantly surprised seeing the social conflicts.
Plus Madeline is a strong female lead in her own right, she’s kind, selfless and really grows in this story I don’t get why people think she’s weak/stupid- she’s sort of a subversive Cinderella female lead archetype in the sense that she is rewarded for having a good heart and helping those around her but she doesn’t need powers or magic to prove that. She feels more human than most MCs because she makes mistakes and she’s not perfect or physically strong but she has clear motivations in bettering herself and doing the right thing… (●'◡'●)ノ assign me captain of the Madeline defence squad
i do understand why people think she’s a pushover but i think they fail to comprehend that she was married to ian for quite a number of years before she died in her first life. even if she despised him, there was still a part of her that cared for him. even in her last moments, while she wanted to leave and become a nurse, she ultimately was going to reject the doctor because she cared too much for ian to leave him. so it’s obvious she’s not going to flip a whole 180 and pretend she doesn’t know him. contrary to some opinions, i appreciated her character. she wasn’t an omniscient genius who suddenly knew everything and changed her second life. arguably, i still think she’s a strong character despite her soft-heartedness. i mean, my girl literally went to prison and got shot lmao. it proves you don’t have to be a “girlboss” to be a strong character. second in command to the Madeline Defense Squad!
