Yes, he did it to make his mother happy.
She was an extremely unhappy woman and he was put into the role of being the key to her happiness when he was a small child. We see that with the story about him taking her hand and making her smile when they were on vacation. It was likely not intentional on his parent’s part, but that is the role he was put into. The line he says to Mishima “it’s no good unless my mom is smiling” (paraphrased) is also an indication of how he lives his life solely to make his mother happy. This is juxtaposed with Mishima’s mother saying that it’s ok if both she and him walk different paths in life because they each have this own lives. It’s fantastically written in this regard.
The author did a great job of making the boys foils of each other. Both are the sons of single mothers, both are queer and yet we can see the difference between someone who was accepted and loved unconditionally and someone who was not.
wait so why did he get married to a woman and have kids?? was it seriously all just to make his mother comfortable? that pisses me off. i read this a long time ago and forgot everything and i didnt remember it ending so bittersweetly.
i guess thats just how it is for some people unfortunately :(
