    “Tod” is also the german word for “death”. In conclusion you could say he was more of a symbolic figure (e.g. coyote vs. sheep, hunter vs. deer, abyss vs. man). So you shouldn’t take it literally, that Dennis could have thought Tod would be down there “as a human/person” and more like a feeling of longing (like for death, temptation, darkness, also desperation and what not you could see as fitting)
