Ezra is mixed native American and white then that means he is a product of race between a white man and a native American women because it was extremely common pre civil war era since many white men were protecting from consequences

you're not overthinking it. it's a one-two punch of 1a) characters of color hardly ever being drawn with their ethnic features, and often looking like recolored white people (or whatever the "default" is for the setting) 1b) being giving "more interesting" coloring than the dark/brown eyes and dark hair the grand majority of nonwhite people have without any thought about how genetics play into that (having a white parent or heritage will often lighten skin and hair colors, but not to the dramatically pale, light/blond hair with blue/green/gray eye color level you often see in east Asian media featuring mixed characters. it's not impossible, but not very likely either). and 2) in the instance of this series, the author may not have thought about the implications of giving the character those features. unless it's leading towards a "I'm not Native enough for the Natives, and got bullied for my beautiful blue eyes, boohoo" #mixedpeopleproblems setup...
