OMG yes! Literally!
Freedom alone doesn't erase the effects of slavery. If someone has no money, no land, no resources, and nowhere to go, they're often forced right back into working for the same people who exploited them just to survive.
We've seen this happen in real history too. Abolishing slavery didn't suddenly create equality overnight. In many places, formerly enslaved people had little choice but to keep working for their former enslavers or under similarly exploitative conditions because they had been denied wealth, education, and opportunities for generations.

I've seen a comment that had my blood boiling cz someone said " MC freed the slaves and gave them some cash so what's the issue?" Imagine those slaves were born in that land indoctrinated into slavery and you think freeing them and telling them to leave was doing something? That's a death sentence. They quite literally had nothing and you think some few dollars was going to do something for them? Was it going to heal decades of oppression? If mans had given them the property and told them you can have it and build something I'd get it. But in this he's just a shithead who thinks he did something. It's outrageous how Jaxx wrote this and didn't see the problem with it. The white man gets to live in a nice place while the "free slaves" go to live in squalor when they're probably the ones that built the house and maintained the property.
