No but why is this so true. I love cross dressing boys and stuff, so it sucks when cross dressing representation gets sidelined and if you call it out, you’re being transphobic. But then on that same coin, any time there’s actual trans representation, they see it as cross dressing instead??? Like, there’s so many great trans representations out there, and people really need to understand the difference between trans and cross dressing representation. It’s crazy how they always misinterpret it when it’s right there in the story.

Yeah!!! It’s so annoying! The amount of times I’ve seen people call a clearly trans character a trap/femboy while calling a trap/femboy character a trans character— LIKE COME ON. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO READ. I get some of it comes from lack of representation so they want it to be representation for themselves but it just erases the representation of another group when they do that and it annoys me. Especially when they vilify anybody that corrects them?? Like wtf?? If you headcanon it that way, sure. But some people actually get so angry when you talk about a character and it doesn’t fit their headcanon.
(For example, Chihiro from Danganronpa. He’s explicitly stated to be a boy, who dresses as a girl due to his past of being bullied and self esteem issues about not being “manly” enough. He literally confides with a more conventional manly character and trains together with him. However, there’s a large portion of people that still headcanon him as being trans, despite it kind of going against his whole character and story. However, at the same time, I’ve heard some reasoning for their headcanon, whether they headcanon them as a trans girl or trans boy, as a way for them to identify more with his character. Some of them are pretty respectful about it, and I’m fine with those people, because they understand it as headcanon as well. It’s like fanfics or aus. They understand it is not canon but it makes them enjoy the original media more. But then there are some that legit get angry if you address Chihiro as male or don’t agree that they’re trans. Like, please tell me we looked at the same story/game. It’s those people that I think really ruin it for everybody and just makes me annoyed in general.)
I swear, media literacy in anime and manga fandoms especially when it comes to queer themes and gender identity has hit an absolute rock bottom. The inability of readers to grasp basic character writing unless explicitly stated is maddening.
We are consuming stories where authors deliberately use visual storytelling, subtle dialogue cues, and character dynamics to showcase different lived experiences.
Kirara (JJK) has explicit narrative framing about her transition and changing presentation from middle school to now. Calling her a "femboy" or a "tomboy" isn't just wrong it completely erases her actual identity and experiences.
Tsubakino (Wind Breaker) is a example of a cisgender, crossdressing gay man who embraces femininity without being trans. Forcing a trans label onto him strips away the beauty of a character who is comfortable in his manhood while loving feminine aesthetics.
Mei Kinosaki (Marriage Toxin) A male marriage swindler who crossdresses professionally to manipulate targets and loves cute things but explicitly identifies as a guy and uses masculine pronouns to refer to himself.
Hiura (How to Make a "Girl" Fall in Love) A boy who starts crossdressing because his friend does his makeup, enjoying the cute presentation and his feelings for Midou not transitioning or identifying as a woman.
Not every feminine guy is trans. Not every trans woman is a "femboy." A person’s clothes do not equal their gender, and their gender does not dictate their sexuality. If a story requires you to do an ounce of reading between the lines or understanding basic human diversity, half the comment section loses its mind and starts using extremely disrespectful words like "Cake is still a cake with a candle"...
I’m not even angry anymore, just deeply disappointed. Authors give us incredible, varied representation, and the fandom just flattens it all out because they refuse to accept it cuz either they are homophobic, transphobic, or just dumb.
