no exactly. and even with garam he still sucks. i’ve just finished reading this story now im caught up, and i still don’t get how ppl call him a complex character, he isn’t. he’s a piece of shit and he SUCKS. he’s hurt so many of his students, people closed to him, and even garam who has never done anything. the rape was too much i hated it, the author had no need to draw their first time like this. it was gross. he is no different than these toxic mls that everyone hates, but somehow when it comes to this story its a complex character. well okay then the ML in painter of the night is also a complex character if we think of it, isn’t he ? he had a rough past and trauma, hence why he raped the mc for the entire serie, right?

Here's a definition of a complex character: A complex multi-dimensional persona with conflicting motivations, flaws, and an inner life. Unlike "flat" characters defined by a single trait, they mirror real human psychology by making unpredictable decisions, experiencing internal conflict, and often evolving as the story progresses.

I think heejae IS complex, the way a human is always complex no matter if they were an asshole or a saint. It may not be resonating with you, and that's fine, but people flock to this manhwa for a reason and for me personally it's mainly because of how human the writers write the characters.

Is there any reason for heejae to act like an asshole? I think there are multiple reasons we can see up to the chapter you read, but you may not like it because it's not some noble or grand one. Just like how real people are an asshole not always because of trauma or hurt, but for multitude of seemingly insignificant reasons.

Is heejae and garam's first time rape? No. It is a power imbalanced sex though (like their whole relationship) and it's toxic as fuck, it's not rape. Try looking up "dubious consent" instead.

Is their relationship abusive? Of course!!! One of the biggest themes of the manhwa is abusive love! Abusive love between you and your parents, abusive love between you and your mentor, abusive love between you and your passion.

the abusive trope doesn’t necessarily bother me but in this case it bothers me because people defend and actually understand heejae persona when there’s nothing to defend nor understand : he is an abuser. yeah he is more than that and he suffers from loneliness, brother has anger issues and abandonment issues yada yada, but he doesn’t NEED to do all that. he constantly hurt people around him and more than that he has never apologized to any of them. that pisses me off. i don’t see any character development, he is still the same after all, he never changes.
