I mean, he kinda killed estelle for his own selfish reasons, in estelle pov her life was robbed for someone’s idealism while she lost her swordmanship her friends basically everything and had to start a new life as someone else. Sure khalid has a sad backstory but if only he confides in estelle and tell her the truth they won’t end up the way they are now. Its ironic how hes scared of death, but later said that he doesnt wanna live in a world without her when hes the one who killed her in the first place, and i guess him continue living is a form of punishment for what hes done and also a blessing for what he have gone through in his life.

What ending would you have given him? He is now living with the other knights, just not having any connection to estelle.
Imo this was the best he could get. He didn't communicate a single thing to estelle, he let her stay ignorant. He could have taught her politics and how nobles work. Her friends too. They all used Estelle so they could have an Idol, but then Khalid tried to blame her for His own selfishness. He killed Estelle partly to spare her the torture, but mainly for his own obsession. Also with Estelle already having heard the conversation about how she was betrayed it was all the more pointless to kill her. His reasoning was "to save her from feeling betrayed" but she was already. She was feeling down and hopeless facing the situation that's why she was at the top of the Tower looking down when he met her. So whatever he did was utterly pointless. With her reincarnated it was impossible for her to forgive His betrayal and their relationship was beyond repair.
