i was one of the early gsgw readers too but youve gotta understand that it still had a pretty big fandom (albeit in korea at first) because baek deoksoo already has popular works (debut or die). its super normal for shipping to happen in fandoms like these; i like that its multi shipping friendly too. gsgw is one of those novels where you can enjoy the deep and ever growing plot while still having fun in the fandom. its a great adaption and im glad the fandom is growing even more. you cant get too mad about shipping because i mean. how else would the fandom be fun?? its such a non problem but you do you bro

And out of all non romance books, GSGW is the only one I have a ship for because it does kinda make it fun for us BL readers XDXD nonetheless, I do think it's rude to ask someone what their ship is in a non romance novel like this. Especially since it's often referring to a gay pairing in a not gay novel. I'm also a novel reader (I quite my first time because MC was annoying with all of his complaining about being terrified, yet always calm headed enough to get out of the situations, it felt like all talk no show for his fear (except maybe 2 instances)), and now I'm half way through season 2. I love the twists and turns this author does. Also found out they're the author of Debut or Die, so I'm rereading that one too.
I do think novels are inherently better than adaptations because novels give all of the context, all of the character thoughts, all of the character actions and the reason behind those actions. Ik when there was gunna be an adaptation, MC this time would look a lot cooler, stone faced, then the internally screaming coward that he shows as in the book. Internal thoughts that go against outward appearances don't adapt well.
Also as others have said, this is one of the hottest novel in Korea rn, so it's only getting popular with English fans now, (as if it wasn't topping the NovelUpdates charts for the last year or two regardless). But comic readers is a few times larger fanbase than novel readers. Also in general, this is just why I don't join fandoms for books I read. I like my interpretation, and I don't like seeing fanfic get so popular some things different from the book end up becoming headcannon for the fans. I don't read fanfiction, so I don't understand your headcannon logic. No hate to fanfic authors or readers, all respect actually (especially to the authors) but that's how stories evolve as different ideas become popular, I just liked the original as a standalon. Some deep fanfic readers sometimes forget what is cannon and what was common fanfic ideas. So I solve this problem by just staying out of fandoms all together, it's a me problem not a them problem, let them have their fun. There's few free things to do fun anymore anyways in today's economy XD
The point is, it's okay to not like an adaption (those you won't get sympathy from the adaption readers by posting your opinion here) one fun thing about reading a book is posting your theories as the story progresses, and I think those are the comments you're reading. People making predictions not assuming it is fact. I find it fun to read those comments because you get to see how their minds work. I agree that the novel is better, and also I agree that the first adaption you read of a story often ends up your favorite, nothing wrong with that. Adaptions are never perfect because it is a different medium.

I've gotta disagree, I don't think people who go to book clubs talk about shipping Victor Frankenstein with The Monster. It's truly just a huge issue with bwing "in the fandom" because all "oc content" or "headcannons" ultimately devolve to romantic endgoals with disregard to the actualy characters and personalities. Hell, many people just outright sexualize the MC and ignore every female character in GSGW, it's nearly imposible to find ANYTHING that isn't talking about how KSE is the ultimate yaoi bottom uwu beautiful baby boy and how the big cool men need to top him. Or how KSE is a harem protagonist. Or how people explicitly call GSGW a Harem Romance novel, or how people that read the novels explicitly posted on trying to trick the new manhwa readers into believing made up bullshit.
I'm honestly begging you to tell me were this seemingly "normal" fandom is, because all I see under the fandom tag is Fujoshis stamping all over it, making the MC a woobie and viewing all amle characters as love interests and then treating the other girls as Flat and Uninteresting, if not outright ignoring the female characters. Otherwise everything else is just children and teenagers, which I don't like interacting with on principle.

As a novel reader i understand about gatekeeeping cuz i also like keeping my favorites lowkey, but saying that the adaptions of orv and GSGW hurts you is just wrong when the artists worked hard in making the adaptions, its probably because u can't accept that there are more and more readers. and CP's' are literally in every fandom, that's the fun in reading communities it's what they talk about. If you're really a true fan of the story then you should be happy that there more mediums for you to read, and imagine finally seeing what the characters look like, it's something you can't have in novels.

ngl, you’re the first person here who actually respected my opinion. I don’t even hate the adaptation at all, but somehow people keep seeing my comments as mean or negative I really don’t get why, since I never even said anything like the adaptation being trash or bad. Honestly, this is my first time ever sharing my thoughts about this publicly, and I’ve realized that people really tend to bash you or get overly sensitive just because someone else sees or feels the story in a completely different way.
I just love GSWG so much that I always go back and re-read the novel, especially because it tells the whole story entirely from Kim Seloum’s point of view, and reading the original versus the manhwa feels like two totally different experiences.
And btw, thank you sm I was already having such a bad day because of my tests earlier, but this really helped. I do enjoy seeing other people’s different opinions too, I just never thought I’d end up getting bashed over something this trivial. At least it doesn’t really affect me badly, though. Maybe I just came off a little too blunt in my comments earlier, that’s why people misunderstood what I really meant.
Are you new to fandom ?? I read gsgw and finished it way before. Rn I'm reading part 3 of the novel as well. I love bl and yaoi but I don't ship anyone in gsgw. I'm not bitching abt it on a pirate site. I can just scroll past those. The adaptations is as good as it can be. It's adapted into a different medium so ofc there's difference. The novels are better bcz the authors are that good at writing it.
Hello, I am new to fandom <3 I don't associate with fandom much, so while I'm well versed in Asian novels and comics, but very noob in any fandom capacity. Only time I come across fandom is when the algorithm randomly sends me stuff or when the fandom is so loud about something it escapes the circle. Some good stuff, some bad/stupid stuff.
I just want to say you can't judge a book by its cover. Just because someone is a fan doesn't mean they have any experience with fandom. Just because someone has an opinion different from yours doesn't mean they're bitching about it. (Tho there is OTP that could be observed) But at least the comic artist isn't reading comments on a pirate website. The goal is just to never say anything bad to the artists and authors face for opinions like these, we gotta make sure they keep writing their works that thousand others love!

As someone who’s been a novel reader and finished GSWG way before it even got popular, I’m honestly not that happy with the adaptation. Well, I lowk love gatekeeping peak stories like this, so I was really shocked when I found out it was getting adapted like, one day the manhwa trailer just popped up out of nowhere. Now there are so many people who never even read the original novel acting like they know everything about it, and the whole story’s space just got flooded with gay shippers. Don’t get me wrong, there were already a lot of shippers back then too, but this new generation only cares about shipping and roleplaying those pairings. I can’t even have a normal conversation about the story anymore without someone asking which ship I prefer. To be honest, I still prefer the novel way more it feels way more thrilling, and the way the first chapter is written hits differently. I’m not saying the adaptation is bad I actually think it’s pretty good, but it still hurts my eyes a bit and I just can’t get used to it. It’s the same with ORV too I’ll always choose the novel over the manhwa adaptation and always thinks they 10x better. Well, I guess people just have different preferences, right? Not sure why I’m even rambling this much in the comments section.
