I did not need to know that you get off on drawing your characters getting raped. What the hell man... It would be one thing if this was a dark manga, but it was a predominantly sweet read that simply had some serious themes intertwined. I was planning to read the second volume, but I'm just gonna stop here. Because knowing that drawing him getting raped was something that actively excited her, when this wasn't even framed as *that* kind of manga, is such a huge turn off (and she described how it excites her in such a disgusting and creepy way...). I didn't need to know that shit and I never would have guessed had she not fucking bragged about it...
The unfortunate truth is essentially all assaults you see in BL are considered fanservice within Japanese otaku culture. It’s very different from outside of Japan. That’s why it’s always so explicit and gratuitous. Took me a long time to realize too. But if you translate the comments from Japanese fans on a lot of manga…the truth is they don’t take anything seriously and make some of the worst stuff into fetish
This is one of the authors notes that had me explore Japanese fan reactions to different “dark” manga I see English readers make excuses for. If you go to the download sites for the raws of any manga you want to learn about…just translate their comments. Sexual violence and things involving kids are things they openly comment on enjoying. The otaku culture in Japan is waaaay different than what us outsiders think. They normalize everything which shouldn’t be a surprise considering some of the stuff I’m sure we’ve all seen on here at some point.
That really explains why, like you said, scenes of sexual assault will often be dragged out, explicitly detailed, and highly romanticized. It's pure fanservice. Rape isn't my thing, but if it's portrayed as unpleasant and traumatizing and messy and it serves the story, then I'm not going to complain about it. But more often than not, you just see the victim blushing like mad and heavily "enjoying" themself despite their halfhearted protests. It's quite sick, and it's why I try to keep a lot of Japanese media at arm's length. I can like it on the surface, but knowing too much about an author's motivations ruins their work for me, unfortunately.
Why tf did the author have to go on about how much she enjoyed drawing Seno getting violated? What the fuck is wrong with you to think that's a normal thing to share with your audience???
