Not really, it's more like a backup save/money for himself. It has always been like that, especially when he hasn't overcome his traumas for his ex, where he lost all freedom and was willing to destroy his own finances to get "freedom"
Especially when his ex not only trapped him, kept him away from the outside world, he also made him codepend on him financially for 10 years straight.
Getting the money is more of a symbol of getting his autonomy back, it'll help him escape the shitty job and gain more freedom for himself (the reason he even gets a shitty job is because he's forced to be trapped in his ex's place, exclude from society for years with 0 work experience)

To be specific, he said that he wanna stay in the competition long and
“i want to stay with you, and be influenced by you. i don’t want things to go how they were”
that’s why he wanna win.
He obviously has insecurities and trust issues due to his traumas.
Look at what happened when he dated his ex, who was successful and famous from the start, he was made to be codependent on him.
So ofc he'd not want that to happen again, sure, his intention has changed a bit compared to his 1st intention w the money.
But that doesn't change the fact that the money will help him stand on his own more than ever, with or without the ML or anyone at all
