To me it seems like the ai, was exiled for some reason. In exile, she lived in that remote village pretending to be a commoner and she came across ajin. Ajin at the time was recovering from a blindness (unknown origin) and they became lovers at that time. While Ajin was away because he had to slay one of his enemies that discovered the village he was staying in, (this part im a bit unsure of) I believe he sent one of his followers to ai (to protect her?). However, the follower didn’t listen to Ajin’s wishes and thought his relations with Ai would hinder his plans so wanted to kill her. This is when we find out Ai is pregnant, as well. However, Ai manages to escape as she is able to call upon some greater power because of her royal blood. Although, she ends up having to kill Ajin’s follower as he somehow managed to elude the fire fox she called upon earlier.
Both hid their true identities from each other when they met in the village (ai and ajin). I assume when Ai had to runaway from Ajin’s follower while pregnant, she thought he was under Ajin’s instructions. Although we know for sure he was not under Ajin’s instructions and acting out of his own volition. That is how they lost contact for 5 years and that misunderstanding initially caused a rift between them, which seems to have quickly been resolved. Although they may be under pretense and don’t fully trust each other yet it seems as Ai is hiding their child and Ajin is somewhat wary of her it seems too.
