Omg yes what he did was wrong and the child obviously didn't deserve to go through such things because of all the bad descisions of adults around, but one can feel sympathy without excusing his actions.

And him trying to kill himself wasnt inherently "wrong" we have no right to put a value on someone's emotions no matter how much we think we know them, yes he's a fictional character but still, even after some years have passed and he came back we can still see his self blaming mentality,

him trying to kill himself was because of his self blame and the depression and failure of acceptance of his situation, he didn't necessarily want to harm his son or make him witness it, and even after the incident instead of trying to make up or raise his son with love he's instead distancing himself and keeps on hanging on to his ex-wife one can clearly see that he's still not mentally well and recovered and clearly not getting help, at worst he's a sad pathetic love bound man, not a bad person

it's just a sad situation overall, no need to see everything through a black and white perspective not only with real people but even fictional character there can be many sides to a person no one sticks to the stereotypical social perceptions of their personalities all the time, even a rigid person's actions may not align with their usual personality or action in a certain situation

But at the end children are the ones who suffer the most because of adults and elders around them. Just hope he'll get help and his relationship and attitude towards the child improves
