Your comment contradicts a lot of their previous interactions and I think it would do you good to go back and read through the story slowly and pay closer attention to these characters and their actions. While the webtoon obviously isn’t as detailed as the novel, I don’t believe it’s done a bad job at bringing the story to life so this obvious misunderstanding cannot be cleared up.
Maxi's father abused her and presented to the world the fake appearance of a precious young lady calm and passive. Riftan fell in love with that image and has been upset at every sign of Maxi straying from that.
He get upset everytime she wants to do something, learning magic ? He forbade it. Using her power to heal ? Forbidden. Going out to the festival ? Didn't like it. Letting her accompany them to war because she is a capable mage and healer ? Forbidden. Voicing her opinion about the conflict with her own father ? Denied. Asking him to not escalate the matter ? Ignored. Letting her stand against her father ? Only accepted because he learned forcing her by leaving her behind does not work. Letting her help resolve the situation ? Never in a million years.
All he does is scream at her, yank her around constantly and hate everything that make her happy : magic and being useful to those she love. He is constantly upset that she isn't obedient, submissive and doesn't stay home doing nothing. He doesn't love Maxi, he love her body and his idea of who she should be, he hate everything that she actually is : someone who enjoy freedom, who like being busy and wants to help people.
Maxi, sweetheart, that's an abusive relationship where your husband treat you like property. Get a divorce please, he doesn't love you, he love the image your father crafted of a submissive, weak and precious little girl. You're his trophy and he'd like it if you could stop talking and having opinions. Dump his lame ass, that is not love.
