When the siblings were younger, they lived with their mom and dad. Their dad was extremely abusive toward their mother, and eventually she killed him. Their uncle found out what happened and, furious over his brother’s death, decided to get revenge on both her and the kids. He got their mother sent to prison, took the two brothers, and separated them.
Jingi ended up suffering the worst of the uncle’s abuse. His uncle sexually abused him, dyed the strip of his hair blonde, and basically molded him into the person he eventually became. We also know Jingi wasn’t the only child around him, since there was another little boy sitting with Jingi in Chapter 90.
The uncle would also print photos of himself with Jingi. The woman developing/printing the photos didn’t realize what was actually happening because she was blind. She was their aunt, who looks a lot like their mother, which is probably part of why Jingi became so attached to her and spent so much time with her.
As Jingi got older, he became involved in gang activity instead of going to school and started doing his uncle’s dirty work. He also seemed to resent his mother for putting him in this situation, so he didn’t visit her. Meanwhile, Heonjae had no idea what Jingi was actually doing because Jingi would lie and tell him he was in college.
Heonjae lived separately, but the uncle still visited him and encouraged his antisocial and violent tendencies. In high school, Heonjae joined track and field and fell in love with his coach. He managed to graduate, but after getting injured while running, his dreams fell apart. His coach also seemed to lose interest in him afterward.
Heonjae eventually started working construction and was beginning to live a somewhat normal life. Then Jingi showed up and offered him a job working for their uncle, which would pull him into the same gangster lifestyle.
Around this time, a homeless man showed up at Heonjae’s door, and Heonjae realized it was his former coach. He took him in, but then did all of those horrible things to him and eventually cut off his legs so he couldn’t escape. Heonjae was caught, went to trial, and was sent to prison.
Then everything came crashing down for Jingi too. He was blamed for the things his uncle had forced/manipulated him into doing and ended up in prison as well. Jingi eventually tried to kill himself. When his uncle came to see him afterward and gave him that whole “motivational” speech, Jingi finally seemed to realize that the love and support he thought his uncle had given him was never genuine. His uncle had been using him and destroying everyone’s lives as revenge for what happened to his brother.
And that basically brings us to where we are now. Jingi wants to kill his uncle and then kill himself. I’m still not completely sure what his plan is with the printed photos, though, so I feel like there’s another piece we’re missing.
