This was so quietly devastating. Even in their cutest, most tender, most ordinary moments together, my mind couldn’t escape what Toshio went through when his mind was not whole and his body was not his own. Had this been a novel, without any tangible illustrations of how happy and healthy Toshio is now, I’d have isolated myself for months. While I’m not fond of Shindoh for being complicit and for having been another cog in that industry in the first place, he has completely altered the trajectory of Toshio’s otherwise dehumanized life.
