It could very well be a case of unreliable narrator as we're seeing everything from the mom's POV
The girl lost it that one time in front of her grandma too. It is not purely with the mom only.

Okay so no shade here truly, but is it possible that it's the mother whose having a psychosis/hallucination break from reality? Like maybe it's her who is acting like her daughter is a baby again (hence the anxious glances from the little girl to her mom) all while believing, in her mind, that her daughter is the one tormenting her?? Like maybe its been her all along who is keeping that girl from going to school (or outside really) by making excuses on her behalf because of her untreated anxiety over "losing" another of her baby? Just a theory
