Hmmmm I don't think that he is really alive. Maybe that is just the last bit of his soul left to watch over them and when the last bit of power will be gone he'll disappear.
Its just my wishful thinking but we cant really say, because theres so many possibilities and so many hints that he's either dead or alive i just want to know who is this demon that okina was talking about, he said he met him in the mundane world beach and said this demon looks like the stuffed toy that ashiya got as a souvenir from the hot spring (where they had their trip) which is near the ocean. Maybe that holds the truth about that butterfly

On the first day of Ashiya and Abeno's search for Aoi, Ashiya's been hearing this waves from an ocean but abeno said there's no ocean in the underworld. Then there's this light colored butterfly floating around them while searching for aoi.
Then ashiya and his family go to a new years vacation in a hot spring then Ashiya's mother told another story about their days with sakae about him hearing a girl's voice which ashiya's mother cant hear it's most likely came from a demon. Ashiya thinks its the demon girl from the hot spring cant remember the name. She has a soft voice that even when ashiya's right beside her you can barely hear her so ashiya thinks that his father (sakae) has keen hearing thats why he tried if ashiya could also hear demons from far away then he heard that same waves from that time he heard while searching for aoi. Then he opened the window from where they were staying then he saw ocean and he's sure that that was the same waves he heard.
Then the search for aoi begun again and abeno noticed that the ocean waves came from the light colored butterfly, they chased it and they cant capture it ashiya thinks that its not an ordinary butterfly then abeno suddenly said "where are they?" "Is aoi alive" ( maygahd my heart ┗( T﹏T )┛ his face when he asked that ╥﹏╥) then the butterfly suddenly goes to ashiya the whispered "Return to the mundane world.. Cease your search.. Aoi is..." (I thought the manga would end there if ever it ended there my sleepless nights ) then ashiya has a frightened face then abeno said "We are chasing it" then ashiya shouted "ABENO SAN" then abeno stopped then ashiya said "did you not hear it?" Abeno said " a voice? No" theb asked "Did the butterfly said something to you?" Ashiya answered "Return to the mundane world.. Cease your search.. Aoi san is dead.." Then abenos face maygahd if only i could ss but the site blocked ss then ashiya added "But the voice.." "THE BUTTERFLY'S VOICE WAS SAKAE'S VOICE"
